and i quote...

here is but a small quote from voltairine de cleyre's "anarchism & american tradition" which seems to be very fitting for this day and age:

To the average American of today, the Revolution means the series of battles fought by the patriot army with the armies of England. The millions of school children who attend our public schools are taught to draw maps of the siege of Boston and the siege of Yorktown, to know the general plan of the several campaigns, to quote the number of prisoners of war surrendered with Burgoyne; they are required to remember the date when Washington crossed the Delaware on the ice; they are told to "Remember Paoli," to repeat "Molly Stark's a widow," to call General Wayne "Mad Anthony Wayne," and to execrate Benedict Arnold; they know that the Declaration of Independence was signed on the Fourth of July, 1776, and the Treaty of Paris in 1783; and then they think they have learned the Revolution--blessed be George Washington! They have no idea why it should have been called a "revolution" instead of the "English War," or any similar title: it's the name of it, that's all. And name-worship, both in child and man, has acquired such mastery of them, that the name "American Revolution" is held sacred, though it means to them nothing more than successful force, while the name "Revolution" applied to a further possibility, is a spectre detested and abhorred. In neither case have they any idea of the content of the word, save that of armed force. That has already happened, and long happened, which Jefferson foresaw when he wrote:

"The spirit of the times may alter, will alter. Our rulers will become corrupt, our people careless. A single zealot may become persecutor, and better men be his victims. It can never be too often repeated that the time for fixing every essential right, on a legal basis, is while our rulers are honest, ourselves united. From the conclusion of this war we shall be going down hill. It will not then be necessary to resort every moment to the people for support. They will be forgotten, therefore, and their rights disregarded. They will forget themselves in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights. The shackles, therefore, which shall not be knocked off at the conclusion of this war, will be heavier and heavier, till our rights shall revive or expire in a convulsion."

collected collections of collectives

of sorts.

i have been doing a bunch of reading via the internet while here at work. i kind of think of it as employer paid education, i assume they would disagree. either way, most of my reading as of late has been revolving around anarchy and anarchism, and naturally, some of it revolves around bicycles. go figure.

well, so far as i can tell it doesn't matter what you are reading, whether it is the biography of voltairine de cleyre, your local newspaper, or the yahoo news website nothing goes without a label. nothing goes without that precursory adjective that informs the reader what viewpoint the article or essay is going to be from prior to actually reading the information contained within. this helps the reader form whatever opinion before reading or totally avoid the writings in other cases. this is just one observation.

also concerning anarchist writings specifically, i am not noticing very many things written that concern "anarchist ways of thought" as a whole. more like collected readings by individuals who oppose certain ideas. which, in my opinion, is a good thing. however, this sort of all inclusive behavior leads to infinite amounts of little factions within the greater whole. which leads to all sorts of little labels and then further leads to infighting and division and, as a result, cooperation as a whole breaks down and becomes ineffective.

this is very apparent in today's political arena, whether anarchist, republican, socialist, or whatever umbrella you choose to stand under.

the reasoning behind this post is so i can look at this text in black and white and base my opinion on the observation of my own two eyes without influence by labels.

or at least i will give it a shot.

consume.

i love shopping at local stores and, for the most part, i hate shopping online.

however, i just went spray paint shopping and as usual ran into the same thing i always run into when spray paint shopping. it is so hard to find good colors at local stores.

but i finally decided on a nice rust-oleum color and some metal primer.

we'll see how it turns out.

...the solution is if we don't need it, we don't take it...

i walked around alone last night
and tried to look at people like i did back then
i kinda wanted just to hang out
remind myself of what it was all about
and everything i thought i shattered
and left laying there that didn't matter
every now and then comes back into my eyes
moving in a new direction
i know if you're not getting better you're getting worse
but watching everybody else
it's getting harder to remind myself of what i've learned
relying on another lame religion
to validate our arrogant traditions
and any day we're going to wonder what we left behind

this girl came up to me and said
i think my teacher used to go to school with you
and she was right
and if for just a second
i'd take off these colored glasses
i can see it might just be a waste of time
and i don't know
everyday that passes
it's getting easier to walk off and it seems all right
and everyday another person
i used to call my friend just disappears from sight
now i see that i'm all alone
just like i always was from the beginning and i
i think maybe that's the reason
i'm not hanging around
i see your face and wonder
where you'll be five years from now
and what it really means to you inside
i can't explain the reasons why i
can't sit back and bide my time
and it just keeps going on and on and on and i don't know..

i was listening to this screeching weasel song and suddenly got the urge to type the lyrics up and actually read them. take stock of the situation assess the complications...

another day at work.

like a parasite.

on the web

go to www.wordcount.org and find out the most commonly used words in the english language.

the word "bicycle" is listed as number 7,868, just before "secretion", however "bike" is number 4,655. unfortunately the word "car" is number 305.

the word "word" is number 487.

passing the time

i'm collecting a whole bunch of addresses right now to mail stuff out. i have some drawings, a few stickers, and one 24X36 painting to mail, but i want to make some more stickers before it all goes.

the greek festival is this weekend so i might take some pictures of the folks there. last year there were some crazy dancers getting down to some traditional greek music. it was good. i hope they are there this year.

r.i.p.

lyler wanders around the house, meowing and searching for his brother. he knew something was wrong before we went to the vet, but now he's trying to find out what.

i'm still expecting to go into the back room and have to kick him off of a pile of clean laundry or pry him off of the window sill to go outside.

the last time i saw him he was skinny and miserable in the vet with an i.v. in his arm and breathing heavily, but purring because we were with him.

shea saw him being shaved and prepared for surgery. i didn't get to see that because i was in the hospital myself. part of me wishes i could have seen him one more time, but another part is glad i didn't have to see him go through that.

the vet did everything she could. so did we. so did he.

rest in peace chivo. your family loves and misses you terribly.
